North Carolina State University was established in 1887 as the North Carolina College for Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The College opened in 1889 with one building - the current Holladay Hall - six faculty, and courses in the agricultural and mechanical arts, adding a curriculum in applied science in 1893. A School of Education was created at North Carolina State College in 1927, but it was changed to the Department of Education in 1931. The School of Education was re-established in 1948. By the 1990s it had become the College of Education and Psychology. It remained under that name until July 1, 2001, when it became the College of Education.
